Sponsoring Program: Galveston Island State Park
If Sunday is your Funday, I have an opportunity for you! Become a Prairie Protector and help fight the weeds that invade our Native Plant Nursery at Galveston Island State Park.
Volunteer Duties Include:
- Weeding - removing weeds and invasive species from the greenhouses, seed trays, potted plants and around the nursery grounds
- Weed-eating - keeping grass trimmed around the garden beds, carport, and soil bin to prevent weeds
- Maintenance - checking greenhouses and irrigation systems for issues and making small repairs if able and applying herbicide to invasive species surrounding the Nursery
Volunteers must be physically capable of performing the tasks associated with the opportunity. This may include but is not limited to walking, sitting, standing, squatting, kneeling, bending, and lifting up to 30 lb. Work will be done outdoors in the heat and humidity with the presence of biting and stinging insects and potentially venomous snakes. This is a team effort, so the ability to work with others is a must. However, the garden is large enough to allow some serenity in solitude. Some practical knowledge or experience in gardening, nursery work, or botany is preferred but not essential. Training will be provided.
The initial work schedule for this opportunity is Sundays only for 2 to 3 hours. Once volunteers are comfortable with the site and the work, the schedule can be adjusted.
Volunteers will be trained in plant identification basics, nursery operations, and herbicide application. Learn to identify and appreciate native plant species at all stages of growth from seed to bloom. This is an opportunity to work outside with a great team of people, contribute to the restoration of endangered coastal prairie, and improve Galveston Island State Park
