Galveston Island State Park- Kayak Interpretive Guide Volunteer

If you are an avid paddler and want to teach others the skills you have, we have a volunteer position for you! GISP is looking for new kayak guides to assist our staff and trained guides with kayak programs throughout the warm months of the year (March- Novemeber).

Volunteer Duties Include:


  • Maintaining kayak gear at the park, including kayaks, lifejackets, paddles and other gear

  • Assisting lead guides on public paddling trips until trained on becoming a lead guide

  • Being able to talk to the public in an educational and informative manner, while upholding the TPWD standards

  • Be able to paddle for up to 2 hours at a time in semi- open water of Galveston Bay

  • Occasionally have to tow in other paddlers

  • Learn and present information about the habitat and inhabitants of the Galveston Bay and marsh ecosystem

  • Be physically capable to perform all duties



Volunteers will receive training in the basics of marsh and bay ecology, interpretation and the paddling trail of Galveston Island SP.

This is an outdoor opportunity, so volunteers must be prepared to contend with the elements of Galveston including heat, humidity, thorny plants, mosquitoes, and other wildlife.
