The Abandoned Crab Trap Removal Program will be hosting its 19th annual event in 2020. To date, over 35,000 derelict traps have been removed from Texas coastal waters through volunteer assistance. From February 21-March 1, 2020 a closure will go into effect for the public use of wire crab traps. During this closure any traps left in Texas coastal waters will be legally defined as litter and are subject to removal. TPWD will set up crab trap drop off sites in each of the eight major bay systems. While many of the sites are stand alone, some sites will be facilitated by staff and volunteers on February 22nd from 8:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. (noon). Those drop off sites listed as "facilitated" will require onshore assistance as well as in the field removal of traps on February 22nd, however volunteers can remove traps on their own anytime during the above dates or groups can volunteer to facilitate any of the stand alone sites.
