Sponsoring Program: Goose Island State Park

CURRENT OPENING: March - April 2026

Do you have a passion for birding? Do you like sharing this passion with others? You could be our next seasonal Spring Birding Park Host!

This position is active EVERY YEAR from March-April. We currently have returning hosts for December-February and are looking for new hosts to take over the March-April (migratory) season. This position could extend into May if availability works for the new host.

Volunteer responsibilities in this position could include (but are not limited to) the following:
-Lead four bird walks for park visitors during the week (Wednesdays - Saturdays).
-Maintain and care for the bird viewing areas in the park (there are two).
-Maintain a feeding station at your campsite.
-Report lists from bird walks into eBird.
-Talk to visitors in the bird viewing areas and your host campsite (you can set those times).
-Assist with the park's Birding Festival (April).

Goose Island has been able to provide birding programs most years over the last decade. Our previous Spring hosts have retired from hosting duties, and we are hoping to continue to provide programs through the Spring. This is not an exhaustive list of possible responsibilities, and other birding ideas are welcome.

Volunteers best suited for this opportunity have extensive knowledge of birds that frequent the Texas Coast, including migrants. Goose Island sees many migrating species during this time of year. Volunteers should be able to identify species by sight and sound, and should have some experience in leading groups on bird tours/walks.

The park provides a limited amount of loaner binoculars for visitors, and has a scope that the hosts can use.

This position must complete at least 30 hours of volunteer service each week and will report to the Park Interpreter. Park Hosts stay in a campsite during their time at the park. The two sites we set aside for bird hosts have electric and water, but are NOT a FULL HOOKUP site as of now.

If you have any questions before applying, please reach out to the Park Interpreter at sara.rock@tpwd.texas.gov or at (361) 463-0764.
