Galveston Island State Park - Prairie Restoration Volunteer

Sponsoring Program: Galveston Island State Park

Got a green thumb? Enjoy the serenity of the garden? Student of land management or environmental science? Or just want to work outdoors while restoring natural habitat? Then join Galveston Island State Park in our efforts to restore critically endangered coastal prairies by cultivating and planting native prairie plants. Come learn to identify and appreciate native plant species at all stages of growth from seed to bloom.

Volunteer Duties Include:

· Seeding - planting native seeds in the Greenhouse

· Potting - separating seedlings and planting young plants in larger trays and pots

· Weeding - removing weeds and invasive species from the pots of the native plants, from the Greenhouses, and raised beds

· Planting - Planting potted plants in the coastal prairie units

Volunteers will receive training in the basics of plant identification, nursery operations, and planting methods. Some practical knowledge or experience in gardening, nursery science, or botany is preferred, but not essential. However, this is a team effort so the ability to work cooperatively is a must.

From seed to seedling to budding plant, volunteers can opt to participate in any or all stages of prairie restoration. However, make sure you are physically capable of performing the tasks that you select. Tasks will involve walking, sitting, standing, squatting, kneeling, bending, and regularly lifting 10 lb. and occasionally up to 30 lb. (bags of potting soil). This is an outdoor opportunity, so volunteers must be prepared to contend with the elements of Galveston including heat, humidity, thorny plants, mosquitoes, and other wildlife.

A minimum commitment of 2 hours a week is requested. Volunteers currently meet twice a week on Monday and Thursday mornings with plantings typically occurring on Monday. Scheduling for nursery operations is negotiable after training.
